the lamp that was sitting on the desk and put it on the floor. Then she picked up the ashtray and the photograph and put them next to the lamp. To the assemblage, she added the laptop.

All set.

One by one, she spread each canvas out on the floor, using the laptop, the ashtray, the lamp, and most importantly of all, the framed picture of the Venters with their fake empty smiles, to keep it flat. Then she took a photograph of it with her cell phone.

She made sure to leave the flash of her camera off so as not to cause any excess glare on the portrait of the happy couple in the bottom left corner of each shot. Once she was done, she returned the entire pack of scrolls back to their spot above the bookshelf.

“Thank you!” she whispered to the spider before climbing down.

She put everything back on the desk and returned the steps to their spot.

When she glanced around the room, everything looked exactly as she had found it.

She switched off the light and opened the curtains, stepping away from the window before putting her torch back on.

9:58 p.m.

Cutting it fine!

Grabbing the rucksack on her way out of the room, she left the house, locking the front door and engaging the alarm behind her.

She drove down the driveway fast, wanting to get out. Her luck would not hold forever. As she opened the gates, lights appeared on the road in front of her. A few seconds later, a car drove past, and it was dark again.

Closing the gates behind her, she turned right and headed for home, making a concerted effort to keep to the speed limit so not as to draw attention to herself. She stopped on the way to buy a large Nandos meal and a double-thick shake; she was famished.
